Gracias Por Su Visita

The project is a visual interaction with and celebration of the small neighbourhood bars that populate every corner of Madrid, a series of photos in which the ever-present pincho de tortilla serves as a linchpin around which to display the familiar and unassuming interiors of these bars, built from a worn patchwork of tile, marble and wood veneer.

Though decontextualisation and repetition to the point of abstraction, mundane elements – a certain chair, a certain tile –  are elevated to rhythmic motifs. The romanticised view of the outsider serves to distil and glorify an eating ritual as elemental to Spanish culture as the dish itself.

‘Gracias por su visita’ is a collaborative series of images created by British photographer Joseph Fox and graphic designer Lizzie Frost, released as a photozine by contemporary art book publisher Terranova. The images have been featured in many publications including Revista Papel, The Financial Times and Architects Digest.
